RU Dining: Good eats, and Student-Card Friendly

As a first year student I’m still trying to wrap my head around the sheer amount of things available to do on campus, but there was one thing I thought I had pretty much down pat: food. There are three different cafeterias, a pub, a cafe, a 24 hour supermarket and numerous restaurants down Yonge Street. However, I found out that there was an eatery I had never heard of before: one run by students. On the seventh floor of the Ted Roger’s Management Building, the HTF 506 Food & Beverage Operations class runs their own restaurant out of the Cara Demonstration Kitchen and Common Room, aptly titled RU Dining. The restaurant’s hours of operation take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:30 pm.

I had the opportunity to get a seat with some of my friends on a particular Thursday, and found myself pleasantly surprised. The staff was polite and helpful, the atmosphere was not unlike a comfortable sports bar, and perhaps most importantly, the food was fairly priced and generously portioned. My guests and I ordered several orders of the “The Mexican Fighter” 5 layer dip, along with the “All Bases Loaded” beer-battered fish and chips and the “Game, Set, Match” mini burgers. The food was great, and we could say that we enjoyed both the prices (the fish was the most expensive thing on the menu at $8.90) and the fact that the restaurant is ONECard friendly (debit and credit are not available forms of payment).

Really, if you’ve got some time to kill around noontime and want to check out a new food venue, go try RU Dining on for size. It has the advantage of convenience and a rotating menu of good food; you can’t really go wrong.
